Designing your way to Mana Motuhake through Enterprise

Practice Foundations – November 2025

Karl Wixon (Ngāi Tahu, Kāti Māmoe, Waitaha, Moriori, Ngāti Toa Rangatira, Pākehā)

Designing your way to Mana Motuhake through Enterprise

This session explored how co-design for enterprise can pave a path to whānau prosperity and mana motuhake.

Pakihi Māori (Māori businesses) often blur the lines between commercial and social enterprise - weaving together culture, commerce, creativity and kaitiakitanga for people, place and planet. Kaupapa Māori design offers a powerful way to navigate this space, enabling enterprises and collectives to shape their future and cut their own track.

Karl Wixon shares his journey from muttonbirding to design and enterprise, drawing on his experience supporting pakihi Māori, including PSGEs*, to design their way to mana motuhake (*Post Settlement Governance Entities).
