The implications of replacing PEDS with ASQ-3

April 2026

Tamariki Wellbeing

This report shares what was learnt when six Well Child Tamariki Ora providers tested replacing the Parents’ Evaluation of Developmental Status (PEDS) with the Ages and Stages Questionnaire (ASQ-3).

This report is the second of four learning reports from a collaboration between Health New Zealand | Te Whatu Ora, community based providers and TSI’s Tamariki Wellbeing Team to prototype changes to the WCTO service.

In the hands of a culturally competent practitioner, the ‘Ages and Stages’ developmental screening tool (ASQ-3) can have a huge impact, helping identify developmental differences earlier and opening up compassionate conversations with whānau about their child’s development. This report draws on the perspectives of kaimahi and whānau involved in the testing to assess the benefits of ASQ-3, share practice learnings from implementation, and identify implications for a national rollout.

You can find more information on this prototype and links to the three other reports here.
